Preference Services

Telephone Preference Service

Most of the telephone calls that you receive are from people and companies that you are happy to hear from. Some of you, however, may decide that you do not want companies to telephone you at home unless you have asked them to do so. It is possible to avoid these unwanted calls by registering with the Telephone Preference Service. This is now a statutory-backed scheme that enables individuals to register their objection to receiving sales and marketing calls at home.

It is unlawful for a UK company to send direct marketing faxes to an individual, sole trader or (except in Scotland) a partnership unless the sender has received prior consent. This prevents you from receiving any unwanted fax messages. Companies who do not fall into the above categories can also register with the Fax Preference Service to indicate their objection to receiving marketing faxes from other companies. It would be unlawful for such faxes to be sent after a number has been registered with this scheme.

Mailing Preference Service

The Mailing Preference Service (M.P.S.) aims to foster good relations between direct mail users and the general public. Many people enjoy receiving business & product information by post, however not everyone welcomes such mailings. Many people are concerned that private information about them is being kept on file by organisations they have never dealt with. In fact, the only data normally held is your name, address and maybe the fact that you have bought a certain type of product before. Nevertheless, the M.P.S. respects your right to choose whether or not you want this information to remain on the mailing list.
